My crew (from a warm climate) never constructing a fireplace before, our inability to speak each others language, the exacting requirements of a Rumford design, and no access to the correct materials made this a very complicated project. Working with their strengths (they know concrete, and they are creative) I etched into the floor the finished size of the concrete I would need so that my firebricks, when laid, would have their correct finished dimensions. And that was the easy part! The Rumford throat would be a real challenge.
